The caller could be trying to extract money from you for repair of a non-existent “problem” on your PC.

A couple of home users have reported this to me recently. This is how one of them described the experience:

17th January 2011 - I was the subject of a phone scam on Saturday morning – just sharing the experience to raise awareness of it.  A woman claiming to be from Microsoft rang and said that my computer was sending out clones, and that I needed to do something about it.  I thought it a bit odd, but as it was possible that Microsoft would have my number from when I registered my laptop software, I listened on.

She asked me to log on and talked me through a few steps that opened my system event log.  It didn’t look too out of the ordinary to me, but I don’t have cause to look at it too often, so kept listening on.  She claimed that the messages indicated that there was a “serious cloning process” going on in my computer and instructed me to open up “Run” and she’d give me some commands to type in that would fix it.

I know enough not to go messing around there in my state of ignorance, so told her I’d write the commands down and check it out with a local computer expert.  She persisted in trying to persuade me, then rang off saying that I should tell the “expert” that there was a cloning process going on in my computer and that they’d know what to do.
